Dusty Tears 02:53
What you feel, you feel alone The sun heats up a stone Adrift on a river, sealed in a drum Waiting for the fall to come The train of a bird dragging the land I wish I could touch my grandmother's hand Turn off the lights and turn them back on And in that time it all will be gone A little dance with a broom I pretend you're with me, here in the room The invisible particles rise I've got dust tears in my eyes
2.
Electric Car 04:47
I saw one on the road today, just outside of town Going about 55 without making any kind of sound The brand new electric car has hit the lots And everyone is wondering how they run Clean and easy sailing, every single mile And when you get low, stop and connect it for a-while The brand new electric car has hit the lots And everyone is wondering how they run Long ago, when we first had a digital clock hanging high on the wall My grandfather smiled, and said, Time to throw away that peg and awl The brand new electric car has hit the lots And everyone is wondering how they run So, come down and get yours, it doesn't matter how much you make Both federal and state are gonna be there to give you a little break The brand new electric car has hit the lots And everyone is wondering how they run

In the red barn, a red Corvair Many years it rusted there I used to dream behind the wheel Oh, how free it would feel Running in and out of the poplar trees Poplar leaves shaking in the breeze Across the way, the combines comb O'er the land of my home My North Dakota home A closer look in the sunshine Old Coke glass along the B-N line Clear away any dirt Feel around the hobble skirt A taste of dust from miles away I bet it rains sometime today The weather vane on the silo dome Points every which way home My North Dakota home No nearer place to me No dearer place to me than my North Dakota home
4.
The Prairie 03:22
No destination I'm just walking on what feels like an abandoned wagon trail As heaven dies I materialize There's a new dawn siding the scales The babbling water of a brook I can imagine Renewed by the long shade of night No better way to regain complexion And turn to face the light You just now notice how you look compared to how you feel You were right about the trail, there's remnants of a wagon wheel Something tells me what you spend your time on only you will invariably wear Just pick a spot on the horizon and imagine yourself out there The heartache returns, and though it holds you down it brings you closer to the source To live inside a moment like this, there's no great power, no greater force

There's much to say, but nobody to say it to I listen to the breeze move through the poplar trees You are not around and I feel it in my bones The strongest tie, love cannot die It's as endless as a sea No matter what, it always shall remain I lean into the great big blue Oh, how it calls me Your touch, you kiss, and more than this, your true devotion

Regal Crown 03:51
8.
A new day, a new month, a brand new year Be thankful you're still here I heard something the other day You can run but you can't run away Too concerned about why they won't respond to me I can be quiet, but am I that hard to see? Being bigger is a much better deal Still I want to tell them how I really feel Every trial is heavy but they are you're own heavy trials Find glory in the work, not the miles You're way's not the only right way, you know I'm gonna be there when you need me And when you need me I'll never let go
9.
Seems like all we do is fight That's why I go out every night The more I drink, the less I feel blue Sometimes I feel like an awful fool Spending my life on an old barstool Yes, I guess, they oughta name a drink after you I don't know how my heart will mend If this is really the end, it's gonna take a lot to make it through You left my heart a vacant lot I'll fill it in with another shot Yes, I guess, they oughta name a drink after you I know that I have reached my fill And I should just go pay the bill When I began I only meant to have a few But somebody told me you left town And here I am with another round Yes, I guess, they oughta name a drink after you I don't know how my heart will mend If this is really the end, it's gonna take a lot to make it through You left my heart a vacant lot I'll fill it in with another shot Yes, I guess, they oughta name a drink after you

about

Tom Brosseau is a songwriter, a keen listener and observer of the American prairie, the land and its people, the real and mythical. Their sayings, their dreams — clung to or abandoned, dashed or come to pass — their heeding to a reliance on the land. The real and mythical of the prairie runs through songs of Brosseau’s from his first album, What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye, to this, his 17th released album, simply and aptly titled, The Prairie. Flecked with stark realization, yet hopeful, the songwriting is immediate. To quote Walter Cronkite: You are there.
